Reaching Buka Buka Island takes at least two flights, a long drive and a boat crossing, each run by a different operator. Most people start with the cheapest international fare. That order is backwards.
Book the scarce things first, and plan every leg backward from the boat. We coordinate this transfer for guests at Reconnect, a private island eco-resort in the Togean Islands with an on-site SSI dive center, rated 4.9 on TripAdvisor.
TL;DR
- Book in this order: room and insurance, international flights, the Makassar to Luwuk leg, then entry paperwork.
- The one fixed time in the transfer sequence is the free 17:00 boat shuttle from our jetty in Tete B, Ampana. Plan backward from it.
- There are no direct flights from Bali or Jakarta to Luwuk. Makassar is the mandatory transit.
- If a late flight or car makes you miss the boat, the booking counts as a no-show. Put your slack early in the journey.

In what order should you book a Togean Islands trip?
Book in order of scarcity. The room is the hardest piece to replace, and flights are the easiest.
Step 1: Lock the room, then insurance
- We cap the resort at 20 rooms. Only some have air conditioning, such as the Beachfront Villa with AC and Villa Athena. We are one of the very few Togean Islands resorts offering AC at all, so book early if you want one.
- Full payment is due at reservation. Rates move with demand.
- Buy travel insurance the same day. We require it.
- Tell us about dietary needs now. The kitchen handles vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets if told at booking.
Step 2: Book international flights 31-45 days out
- Expedia's 2026 Air Hacks Report found 8-15 days out was the cheapest window for international economy flights, but booking 31-45 days ahead still saved about $190 versus booking 180+ days out [expedia.com].
- Bali to Sulawesi flights arrive in Makassar (UPG).
- From Europe, the trip runs roughly 20-24 hours door to door. A night in Makassar is cheap protection against a missed connection.
Step 3: Time the Makassar to Luwuk flight for an 11:25 arrival
- Flights to Luwuk (LUW) from Makassar are run by Wings Air and AirAsia.
- We recommend landing at 11:25. The car to Ampana takes about 5 hours, so you reach Tete B around 16:30. That leaves roughly 30 minutes before the shuttle.
- The car from Luwuk Airport costs extra. Send us your flight number and we arrange it.
Step 4: Sort entry paperwork two weeks out
- ASEAN nationals get 30 days of visa-free entry. Most other nationalities need an e-VOA or a tourist visa.
Step 5: Decide on diving when you book the room
- Dive courses are booked and paid separately from the stay.
- SSI Open Water takes 3-4 days. Advanced Adventurer takes 2-3 days and includes 5 adventure dives.
- Training dives happen at reef sites around Buka Buka Island, a short boat ride out. Instruction is in English, French or Indonesian, in small groups.
- Keep your last day dive-free before flying, as standard dive-safety guidance advises.
Step 6: Prepare in the final 48 hours
- Driver details arrive 24 hours before you land. You get the driver's phone number and a photo of the driver and vehicle.
- Withdraw cash in Luwuk. There are no ATMs in the Togean Islands.
Which months should you plan a Togean Islands trip around?
Water stays at 27-30°C year-round, so a 3mm wetsuit is enough in any month.
| Period | What to expect | When to book the room |
|---|---|---|
| April-October | Dry season, calmest seas | As soon as your dates are firm |
| July-August, Christmas/New Year | School holidays and peak travel | Earliest of all |
| November-March | Rainy season, rougher crossings possible | Confirm your insurance covers weather disruption |
What happens if a flight or car runs late on transfer day?
Transfer day is where planning backward pays off. Independent operators run the car leg.
Think of two flights on separate tickets. The second airline owes you nothing if the first lands late. Each leg here is run independently, so an upstream delay becomes your problem downstream.
You have four ways to build in a buffer:
- Stay in Makassar: spend the night there before the Luwuk flight.
- Stay in Ampana: stop overnight in town. We send hotel recommendations.
- Charter a boat: book the Pegasus speedboat, which runs day and night, if you miss the shuttle.
- Message us: use WhatsApp for emergency support during the journey.
Your insurance must cover weather disruptions, illness, injuries, evacuation and cancellation for any reason. In force majeure cases we try to reschedule, but we cannot guarantee refunds.
The trip home starts with the 10:00 shuttle from the island, which puts you in Luwuk by mid-afternoon. Only book a same-day flight that leaves well after that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Luwuk the only reliable way into the Togean Islands?
Luwuk is the main reliable gateway. The only other reliable route is via Gorontalo.
Can I book through Booking.com or Agoda?
Yes. Cancellations then follow the platform's rules, which we cannot override. Booking direct comes with our best-rate guarantee and no agency fees.
Can I change my dates after paying?
Date changes follow the cancellation rules. A free change is a courtesy, not a contractual right, and low-season flexibility depends on availability.
Is a Togean Islands National Park visit included?
No. Buka Buka Island is a gateway to Togean Islands National Park, reached on the paid Togean Day Trip. Park entry fees are extra where they apply.
Can I stay for a month or longer?
Yes, through our Island Residency program. We set monthly and long-term rates with you directly. Starlink Wi-Fi is strongest in the restaurant and also reaches the rooms.
