The usual way to fit Open Water into a holiday is back-to-back: theory, skills and dives on consecutive days. On a honeymoon, that leaves you tired and short on the slow days you came for.
The fix is simple. Do the theory at home before you fly, then split your training dives across non-consecutive days with real rest between them.
We are an island eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center on Buka Buka Island in the Togean Islands. Roughly half of our guests are divers or doing their first certification, and this is the schedule we suggest to couples.
TL;DR
- The SSI Open Water course has three parts: academics, confined water skills and 4 open water dives.
- Split the dives across two non-consecutive days. A 9-night stay fits the course, 4 rest days and a first fun dive together.
- An SSI Open Water certification qualifies you to dive to 18 m with a buddy. PADI's entry level has the same limit.
- In the SSI vs PADI choice, the instructor, group size and schedule fit matter more than the agency.
How long does the SSI Open Water course really take?
SSI suggests 16 to 32 hours for the Open Water Diver course [divessi.com], and most of those hours are not spent in the sea. They go to academic sessions and confined water practice before any open water training dives.
That is your first lever. SSI's digital learning materials let you finish the academics at home, so island time goes to the water.
The second lever is that SSI evaluates each diver individually. The instructor signs off only once confident in each student's skills [training.divessi.com], so one of you can need an extra session without holding the other back.
- At home: digital academics and the medical questionnaire
- On the island: confined water skills, final exam review, then the training dives

How do you build rest days into an Open Water course?
A two-dive morning is full but unhurried.
Training dives take place at reef sites around Buka Buka, a short boat ride from the beach. Here is the template we suggest.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive on the 17:00 shuttle from Ampana. Nothing scheduled. |
| 2 | Rest. Snorkel the house reef wall, 200 m off the beach. |
| 3 | Confined water skills and exam review. Free afternoon. |
| 4 | Training dives 1 and 2 at a gentle site such as Coral Gardens (8-15 m). |
| 5 | Rest. Kayak, paddleboard, or join the paid Togean Day Trip into the national park. |
| 6 | Training dives 3 and 4. Certified. |
| 7 | Rest, or a Bajau village visit. |
| 8 | First fun dive together as buddies, at Angel's Window or Wrong Entry. |
| 9 | No diving. This is your buffer before flying. |
| 10 | 10:00 boat back to Ampana. |
Instructor schedules shift with the season, so confirm the split when you book.
After a morning of dives, a cool room matters. Some rooms at Reconnect have air conditioning, a genuine rarity in the Togean Islands. The Beachfront Villa with AC costs from €110/night as an upgrade; the full-board rate starts at EUR 60/night in standard rooms.
What if one of you loves diving and the other doesn't?
Two people rarely learn at the same speed. A honeymoon adds pressure to keep up.
Agree before you start that either of you can stop, and that stopping says nothing about the trip. Plenty of our guests never dive at all.
Your options, ranked:
- Option 1: Both certify, at different speeds. We teach in small groups only, in English, French or Indonesian.
- Option 2: Try before committing. Discover Scuba Diving is a half-day try-dive at €80. If it clicks, book Open Water afterwards.
- Option 3: One dives, one snorkels. Guided snorkel trips go to Tanjung Pasir, a 0-10 m slope, and to Tanjung Gurita. The non-diver still gets reef time on dive mornings.
SSI vs PADI: does the agency matter more than where you train?
Both agencies are recognized worldwide, and dive centers accept either card for fun dives.
The practical differences:
- SSI training runs through an on-site dive center, with materials delivered through SSI's app.
- SSI requires the instructor to have evaluated every required skill by the end of the open water sessions [training.divessi.com].
- SSI's five-dive follow-on is Advanced Adventurer. PADI's equivalent is Advanced Open Water Diver.
Where you train shapes the honeymoon far more than the agency does. Some resorts in Indonesia build their entire operation around daily diving schedules, which suits couples who both want to dive hard.
At Reconnect, diving sits alongside house-reef snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, village visits and park excursions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Open Water course included in the all-inclusive rate?
No. Courses are booked and paid for separately from the stay. The full-board rate covers meals, house-reef snorkeling, kayaks and paddleboards.
Courses include a BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins and mask. Dive computers are rented separately.
Do we need medical clearance before we travel?
Every student completes SSI's medical questionnaire. If either of you answers yes to any question, get a physician's sign-off at home. That is far easier to arrange before you leave than from a remote island.
What insurance do we need?
Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover weather disruptions, illness, injuries, evacuation and cancellations for any reason. Confirm that your policy includes scuba training.
We keep emergency oxygen on site, and our staff are first-aid certified. The nearest recompression chamber is RS Bhayangkara in Palu.
Can we continue to Advanced on the same trip?
Yes, if you add 2-3 days for Advanced Adventurer. Advanced Adventurer is SSI's five-dive course. Once you complete 4 specialties and log 24 dives, SSI automatically awards the Advanced Open Water Diver recognition rating.
What are conditions like for first-time divers?
Water sits at 27-30°C year-round, so a 3 mm wetsuit is enough. Visibility averages about 30 meters. Warm, clear water makes skills like mask clearing less stressful for new divers.
