Flight searches make remote Indonesia look simple. Then you land in Jakarta and find that the real trip starts there: a second flight, a third, a long road, and a boat with its own timetable.
We coordinate the journey from Luwuk Airport to Buka Buka Island in the Togean Islands for our guests. That puts us on the ground for every leg, so we see where the chain holds and where it breaks.
The short answer: several hidden islands are reachable inside a day from Europe, but only when every leg connects on the same day.
TL;DR
- Reconnect reports 20 to 24 hours door to door from Europe to Buka Buka, and 8 to 10 hours from Jakarta or Bali.
- Rank islands by connections, not kilometres. The slowest timetable in the chain sets your arrival time.
- Karimunjawa and Saparua need the fewest connections after Jakarta or Bali.
- Luwuk Airport is the main gateway to the Togeans.
Why is door-to-door time a better measure than distance?
Door-to-door time is the full clock from leaving home in Europe to reaching your room, including every wait between legs. Once you leave the big hubs, time in the air is the smallest part of it.
It works like changing trains on a rural branch line: an express saves nothing if the local train it feeds runs twice a day. In eastern Indonesia, that timetable usually belongs to a regional flight or a boat.
Ask three questions of any route:
- How many legs follow your arrival in Jakarta or Bali?
- Which leg runs least often?
- Do the legs line up on one day, or force an overnight stop?

Which hidden Indonesian islands are quickest to reach from Europe in 2026?
The table ranks islands by fewest legs first. We publish hours only for the route we coordinate. For the others, the leg count and the clock-setting leg tell you more than an estimate we cannot verify.
| Rank | Island group | Legs after Jakarta or Bali | Leg that sets the clock |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karimunjawa, Central Java | 2 to 3: road to Jepara, or air or rail to Semarang then road to Jepara, then ferry or fast boat | The boat, which depends on sea state |
| 2 | Saparua, Maluku | 3: flight to Ambon, road to Tulehu, fast boat | The boat crossing |
| 3 | Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan | 3 to 4: flight to Berau (often via Balikpapan), road to Tanjung Batu, speedboat | The road leg |
| 4 | Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi | 3 or more: flights to Wangi-Wangi, then boats between islands | Inter-island boats |
| 5 | Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi | 4: Makassar, Luwuk, road to Ampana, boat | The road leg and daily boat timing |
Wakatobi spans four main islands (Wangi Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko), so your last boat depends on which one you pick.
How do you get from Europe to the Togean Islands in under 24 hours?
The whole chain is built backwards from one fixed point: the daily shuttle from Ampana.
Step 1: Long-haul into Indonesia
Fly into Jakarta or Bali.
Step 2: Jakarta to Luwuk via Makassar
No direct flights reach Luwuk, so Makassar (UPG) is the mandatory transit. Wings Air and AirAsia fly to Luwuk (LUW). Book the flight that lands at 11:25.
Step 3: Road to Ampana
A private air-conditioned car takes about 5 hours, arranged by us and paid separately. We email the driver's details 24 hours before you land.
Step 4: Boat to Buka Buka
Our free shuttle leaves our Tete B jetty daily at 17:00 and takes 30 to 45 minutes. If that feels tight, we recommend Ampana hotels for an overnight. Private charters and the Pegasus speedboat run at other times.
The only other reliable route in is via Gorontalo.
What does the extra travel time buy you on Buka Buka?
Fewer legs usually mean more visitors. That trade sits behind any remote island search, and it is why Reconnect works as a Private Island Resort that travelers can still reach on scheduled flights.
Mornings start glassy, with the reef wall dropping from bright coral into deep blue. The house reef wall sits 200 m from the beach, and visibility averages about 30 meters.
- Snorkeling: gear is free and guided boat trips go to Tanjung Pasir and Tanjung Gurita.
- Diving: our SSI dive center reaches sites such as The Wall and Pinnacles by short boat ride. Courses are booked separately from the stay.
- Full board: from EUR 60 per night for two, with kayaks and paddleboards included.
- Comfort: select villas have air conditioning, including the Beachfront Villa with AC and Villa Athena. Reconnect is one of the very few Togean Islands resorts offering AC at all.
- Off-grid: 93% solar power, desalinated water made on site, and Starlink Wi-Fi.
- Park access: we sit at the gateway to Togean Islands National Park, which you visit on our paid Togean Day Trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Reconnect an eco-resort or a dive center?
We are an eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center. Roughly half of our guests dive or take a first certification, with instruction in English, French or Indonesian. The rest snorkel, paddle and visit Bajau villages.
What happens if a delayed flight makes me miss the boat?
Under our policy, missing the boat because of a third-party transport delay counts as a non-refundable no-show. Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover weather disruptions, illness, injuries, evacuation and cancellations for any reason. We give you a WhatsApp emergency contact during the journey.
Do I need cash in the Togean Islands?
Bring it from the mainland. There are no ATMs in the Togean Islands, and the nearest one is in Luwuk. We accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex, processed in IDR.
Does "Private Island Resort" mean Reconnect owns Buka Buka?
No. The term describes the experience. We are effectively the only resort on the island, so the beaches and reef stay uncrowded. At certain times of year, you can book the whole resort exclusively.
