Sulawesi's best reefs sit in three regions hundreds of kilometres apart, and few flights link them directly. The routing that works is simple: connect through Makassar, pick fewer regions than you first planned, and treat every regional change as a full travel day.
We run Reconnect, an island eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center on Buka Buka Island in the Togean Islands. Our team coordinates guest transfers into the archipelago every day, and that work shapes the advice below.
TL;DR
- North Sulawesi: Bunaken walls, Lembeh muck diving and Bangka Island soft corals, all reached from Manado.
- Central Sulawesi: the Togean Islands, reached via Luwuk Airport, a drive to the port of Ampana, then a boat. Gorontalo offers a northern link from Manado.
- Southeast Sulawesi: Wakatobi diving starts with a domestic flight to Wangi-Wangi, usually connecting through Makassar or Kendari.
- Time: two regions fit 14 days. All three need about 21.
- Order: learn to dive early and save current-swept sites for later.
Which Sulawesi diving and snorkeling regions are worth combining?
Each region rewards a different kind of diver.
| Region | Gateway | Diving character | Snorkeling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bunaken (North) | Manado, then boat | Wall diving along steep reef drop-offs | Shallow reef tops along the walls |
| Lembeh Strait (North) | Manado, then road to Bitung | Muck diving: critters on dark sand slopes | Limited; this is a diver's and photographer's site |
| Bangka Island (North) | Manado, then road and boat | Soft corals, pinnacles, regular current | Possible in sheltered bays |
| Togean Islands (Central) | Luwuk, then Ampana port and boat | Reefs, walls and pinnacles; visibility averages 30 meters around Buka Buka | House reefs and village shorelines |
| Wakatobi (Southeast) | Wangi-Wangi airport | Remote reef walls and slopes | Often starts from shore |
The north packs three styles around one airport. Many divers split it between two bases: one near Manado for Bunaken and Bangka, one at Bitung for Lembeh.
The Togeans and Wakatobi each sit at the end of their own travel chain.

What is the best order to route North, Central and Southeast Sulawesi?
The best routes pass through it as rarely as possible.
Option 1: North Sulawesi + Togeans (14 days, best for mixed divers and snorkelers)
- 6-7 nights in North Sulawesi, split between Bunaken and Lembeh.
- Cross to the Togeans via Gorontalo, or fly Manado to Luwuk through Makassar.
- 6-7 nights in the Togeans, then exit through Luwuk.
Option 2: Togeans + Wakatobi (14 days, for reef-first divers)
- No direct link exists between the two; both connect through Makassar.
- Budget a possible overnight in Makassar between regions.
- Best if you prefer walls and coral to critter hunting.
Option 3: All three (about 21 days)
- Manado first, into the Togeans via Gorontalo, out via Luwuk, then Makassar to Wakatobi.
- This loop never backtracks.
Three regions in two weeks works on paper. In practice, each of the three regional changes costs a full travel day.
Which two routes reach the Togean Islands?
The Togeans are the leg most likely to break a multi-region schedule, so fix it before booking the others.
Route 1: Luwuk (the main, reliable gateway)
Wings Air and AirAsia fly the Makassar to Luwuk leg, and the car to Ampana is billed separately from the stay.
The timing hinges on one boat: our free daily shuttle leaves our jetty in Tete B, Ampana at 17:00 and returns at 10:00. A Luwuk arrival around 11:25 fits it best.
Miss it and you need a private charter; our Pegasus speedboat runs day and night. Leaving, you reach Luwuk late afternoon, so check onward flights before a same-day departure.
Route 2: Gorontalo (the northern link)
The ferry from Gorontalo suits travelers arriving from North Sulawesi. It does not run daily, so confirm the timetable before fixing flights. Our free shuttle runs from Ampana only, so arriving this way means a private boat for the final hop.
How should divers sequence courses and dive days across regions?
Learn first. SSI Open Water at Reconnect runs 3-4 days with four open water dives at reef sites around Buka Buka, a short boat ride out. Courses are paid separately from the stay and taught in English, French or Indonesian.
Know the depth line. Open Water certifies you to 18 meters. Our Pinnacles site sits at 20-35m, and The Wall drops past 40m.
Practice in Lembeh. Its muck sites are mostly slow, shallow dives, which suit newly certified divers working on buoyancy.
Step up mid-trip. SSI Advanced Adventurer adds five adventure dives over 2-3 days. Finish it before Bangka's currents or Bunaken's deeper walls.
End each region in the shallows. Make the final day a snorkeling day. You stay clear of standard no-fly-after-diving guidance and still get in the water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a visa for Indonesia in 2026?
Can I get cash in the Togean Islands?
No. There are no ATMs in the Togean Islands, and the nearest is in Luwuk. Withdraw enough before the drive to Ampana.
What wetsuit should I pack?
Around Buka Buka the water stays at 27-30°C year-round, and a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient. Check conditions separately for each other region on your route.
Where is the nearest recompression chamber for Togean diving?
The nearest chamber is RS Bhayangkara Palu, with emergency transport available. We keep emergency oxygen on-site with first-aid certified staff, and we require travel insurance that covers evacuation.
