Several of Indonesia's best-known dive sites sit in strong current or start deep. An Open Water diver then watches the highlights from above, or skips them entirely.
The short answer: choose a region for its current and for how shallow its reefs peak, not for its headline species. In the Togeans, visibility averages about 30 meters.
At Reconnect, an eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center on Buka Buka Island in the Togeans, roughly half our guests are divers or doing their first certification.
Our guides already split sites by level: Angel's Window and Wrong Entry for Open Water divers, Survival and Space X for Advanced.
TL;DR
- PADI and SSI both stop Open Water divers at 18 meters. Current and entry conditions decide how much of a region fits inside that.
- Best fit for an 18-meter diver: the Gili Islands, Lembeh Strait and the Togean Islands.
- Save for later: Komodo and the current-heavy sites of Raja Ampat and Nusa Penida.
- Your agency changes the names of your next courses, not today's limit.
What actually limits an Open Water diver in Indonesia?
Holding depth is like holding a steady speed on a bicycle-no thought on flat ground, constant correction on a hill in gusting wind, and every correction costs air and attention.
Use these checks for any region:
- Signature sites: on reef tops and slopes above 18 meters, or on deep walls and pinnacles?
- Current: mild and predictable, or strong and tide-driven?
- Entry: sheltered shore or calm boat entry, or open-water drops?
- Visibility: clearer water shows you more of a deep feature from a shallow position.
- Group size: fewer divers per guide means closer depth supervision.

Which Indonesian dive regions suit divers who stay within 18 meters?
Ranked on current and reef depth rather than reputation, Indonesia's main regions fall into four groups.
| Region | Diving style | Fit within 18 m | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gili Islands | Calm entries, gentle currents, sandy bottoms, shallow coral gardens | Best fit | Busy, well-developed island hub |
| Lembeh Strait (North Sulawesi) | Muck diving on dark sand slopes | Best fit | Little classic coral scenery |
| Togean Islands (Central Sulawesi) | Coral gardens, walls and pinnacles in calm water | Best fit | Complex access via Luwuk |
| Bali, sheltered sites | Shore dives and reef slopes | Good with care | Nusa Penida sites are known for strong current and cooler upwellings |
| Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi) | Reef walls and slopes | Good with care | Remote; plan access early |
| Bunaken (North Sulawesi) | Steep walls | Good with care | Walls drop far below 18 m, so buoyancy discipline matters |
| Raja Ampat (Southwest Papua) | Shallow reef tops, current-swept channels | Mixed | Many signature sites run in strong current |
| Komodo | Channels and pinnacles | Save for later | Strong, changeable currents |
Gili Islands diving matches the conditions most people trained in. Lembeh Strait diving is the opposite trip: slow, close-up critter hunting, much of it on shallow sand.
Ask which signature sites sit above 18 meters when comparing options.
Where do the Togean Islands fit for Open Water divers?
The Togeans pass every check: calm water, coral in the shallows and clear visibility.
The depth limit restricts your body, not your eyes. Hovering at 15 meters on a clear wall is like standing on a third-floor balcony-you cannot walk down to the street, but you see everything happening on it.
Light falls in slanting shafts down the reef face, and the blue below never quite ends.
| Site | Depth | Open Water fit |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Gardens | 8-15 m | Entire site within limit |
| The Wall | 15-40 m+ | Top section only |
| Pinnacles | 20-35 m | Needs deeper certification |
Groups are capped at 4 divers per guide. Instruction runs in English, French or Indonesian, with training dives at reef sites around Buka Buka, a short boat ride out.
Access runs through Luwuk Airport (Makassar connection), then a 5-hour drive to Ampana port, then 30-45 minutes by boat. We coordinate every leg.
PADI vs SSI: does your agency change where you can dive?
Operators across Indonesia accept both cards.
- SSI's next course: Advanced Adventurer, five adventure dives (2-3 days with us).
- PADI's equivalent course: Advanced Open Water Diver.
- SSI Advanced Open Water Diver: a recognition rating awarded automatically at 4 specialties plus 24 logged dives. You do not book it.
- SSI Deep Diving specialty: allows dives to 40 meters.
Our advice: if your region's best sites sit deeper, take Advanced Adventurer in the first days of the trip so every later dive benefits. If they sit shallow, skip the course and simply dive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own dive computer?
It is the easiest way to hold a depth limit precisely. At Reconnect, dives include BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins and mask; computers are rented separately, and bringing your own gear earns 5% off.
What wetsuit should I pack?
In the Togeans the water stays 27-30°C year-round, so a 3mm suit is enough.
How far is the nearest recompression chamber from the Togeans?
The nearest is RS Bhayangkara Palu, with emergency transport available. We keep emergency oxygen on-site and first-aid certified staff.
What can a non-diving partner do?
Snorkel the house reef wall, 200 meters from the beach, with free gear. Guided snorkel trips visit Tanjung Pasir, a 0-10 meter slope, and Tanjung Gurita, and village visits go to nearby Bajau communities.
