Diving couples often hit the same problem: the islands with the easiest diving tend to be the busiest. You don't have to choose between a busy diving destination and a peaceful retreat.
The short answer: pick a small resort where the dives finish before lunch, the reef sites are a short boat ride away, and the afternoon is already paid for. That combination matters more than any ranking of dive sites.
TL;DR
- Judge a resort by its dive schedule, not its site count. Two morning boat dives, around 08:00 and 10:30, leave every afternoon open.
- Reconnect has 20 rooms and is effectively the only resort on Buka Buka Island, so afternoons stay quiet by default.
- Full board for two starts at EUR 60 per night. Diving and dive courses are billed separately.
- The trade-off is distance. Airport to island takes roughly a day by car and boat, and we coordinate every leg.
What should couples who dive look for in a quiet island resort?
A good resort for diving couples protects both halves of the day: efficient diving in the morning and nothing scheduled after lunch. Five checks decide it.
- Dive timing. Morning-only boat dives free the afternoon and leave a long surface interval before dinner.
- Boat time. Sites a short ride away mean more time underwater and less time on deck.
- Group size. Ask how many divers each guide takes. Smaller groups move at your pace.
- What the rate covers. If snorkeling, kayaks and afternoon food are included, a lazy afternoon costs nothing extra.
- Who else shares the island.
Quiet is mostly a question of neighbors. An island's afternoon noise works like a street's: it depends on how many bars line it, not how nice your room is.
One resort on one island means one set of boats and one guest list.

Which Southeast Asia island resorts fit, and where does Reconnect sit?
Those five checks split Southeast Asia's island stays into three broad types. Each suits a different kind of couple.
| Type | Example | What it is built around |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury romance island | Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia; Four Seasons, Indonesia | High-end couples' getaways |
| Popular island resort with diving | Koh Tao, Thailand resorts | Boat rides to dive sites, a well-known scene |
| Remote eco-resort with a dive center | Reconnect, Togean Islands | Morning diving, uncrowded afternoons, full board |
Choose the first type if polished luxury service matters more than reef time. Choose the second if you want plenty of choice and company.
The Togean Islands (Kepulauan Togean) sit in the Gulf of Tomini, Central Sulawesi. Buka Buka has no cars and no village. Reconnect is in the Togean Islands and serves as a gateway to Togean Islands National Park.

What does a dive day at Reconnect look like?
The daily schedule is what turns a dive trip into a run of quiet afternoons.
Morning: two boat dives
- Dive times are confirmed each evening, based on weather, tides and planned sites.
- More than 20 sites around Buka Buka, each a short boat ride out. Visibility averages about 30 meters.
- A maximum of 4 divers per guide.
- Depths range from Coral Gardens (8-15m) to Pinnacles (20-35m) and The Wall (15-40m+).
- Night dives are also available if you want one evening underwater.
Afternoon: nothing scheduled
- Lunch, then afternoon tea.
- Snorkel the house reef wall, 200m from the beach. Masks, fins and snorkels are free.
- Take out a kayak, a glass-bottom kayak or a paddleboard.
- Book a massage: IDR 350,000 for 60 minutes or IDR 500,000 for 90.
- Watch the sunset from your terrace. Every beachfront room faces west.
- Add a romantic dinner for two at IDR 1,000,000.
Salt drying on your skin, a book in your lap, the reef a short swim away. That is the afternoon most couples come for.
What does a stay cost, and how do you get there?
Room rates are per night for two, full board. Prices vary by season.
| Included in every room rate | Paid separately |
|---|---|
| Three meals, afternoon tea, unlimited filtered water, coffee and tea | Fun dives: IDR 800,000 for a single dive, falling to IDR 600,000 each for 10+ |
| Snorkel gear, kayaks, paddleboards | Dive courses |
| Daily boat shuttle from Ampana | Private car from Luwuk: IDR 1,000,000 per car, each way |
| Taxes and service | Togean Day Trip into the national park: IDR 7,500,000 per boat |
The Dive-cation Package bundles 5 days and 4 nights, 8 guided boat dives, equipment, a guide, the return Ampana boat and full board in the Beachfront Glamping Hut. It costs from EUR 500 per person at 2026 rates. Courses are not included.
Rooms that suit couples
- Beachfront Glamping Hut, from EUR 60: king bed, fan, sunset terrace.
- Sunrise or Sunset Villa, from EUR 80: ceiling fan, hot water.
- Beachfront Villa with AC, from EUR 110: our most popular room. One of the very few Togean Islands resort rooms with AC; not every room has it.
Step 1: Fly to Luwuk
- Fly to Luwuk (LUW), usually via Makassar, the main reliable gateway to the Togeans.
Step 2: Drive to Ampana
- Private car, about 5 hours. We send the driver's name, phone number and photo on WhatsApp before you land.
Step 3: Take the boat to the island
-
Our shuttle leaves Tete B jetty, Ampana, at 17:00 daily, about 30 minutes.
-
Secondary route via Gorontalo: overnight ferry to Wakai. Tell us in advance which boat you will take.
- Build in slack: a missed boat due to flight delay counts as a no-show. A night in Ampana is safer, and we can recommend hotels.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if only one of us dives?
Many of our guests never dive. A non-diving partner can join a guided snorkel boat trip to Tanjung Pasir or Tanjung Gurita, from IDR 600,000 per boat for up to 4 people. Another option is a half-day Try Scuba for IDR 1,000,000.
Can we get certified together during the stay?
Yes, as a separate booking. SSI Open Water costs IDR 6,900,000 over 3-4 days. SSI Advanced Adventurer costs IDR 6,000,000 over 2-3 days, with 5 adventure dives.
Instruction is in English, French or Indonesian in small groups. Training dives take place at reef sites around Buka Buka, reached by a short boat ride.
Can we stay connected?
Yes. Free Starlink Wi-Fi covers the resort. It is strongest in the restaurant, and room signal varies. Outlets are European-style.
When is the best time to go?
We are open year-round. The dry season, roughly April to November, brings the calmest seas. The rainy season brings short showers and rougher crossings, but diving continues.
Do we need insurance?
Travel insurance is mandatory, and we recommend DAN dive insurance. We keep emergency oxygen on-site, and our staff are first-aid certified.
