A family of four that mostly snorkels needs three things from a Sulawesi resort: reef you can swim to from the beach, a room that sleeps four, and a price that does not assume you will dive.
We recommend the Togean Islands, and a small eco-resort there where snorkeling is the default and diving is an add-on. Reconnect has hosted guests on Buka Buka Island since 2020 and holds a 4.9 rating on TripAdvisor.
TL;DR
- The Togean Islands offer Sulawesi snorkeling with visibility averaging about 30 meters.
- At Reconnect, house reef snorkeling and gear are free. Guided snorkel boats are priced per boat, not per head.
- Diving is optional and paid separately.
- Plan a full travel day in. Reconnect coordinates the car from Luwuk Airport.
Where in Sulawesi should a snorkeling family stay?
For a snorkeling family, the reef is rarely the hard part. Reaching it every day without a long boat ride is.
The Togean Islands sit in the Gulf of Tomini off Central Sulawesi, in Tojo Una-Una Regency.
On a calm morning the water shifts from pale sand to deep blue in a few fin kicks.
Some Togean properties are built mainly around diving. If diving drives your trip, compare them seriously. If snorkeling drives it, screen any resort on four points:
- Beach access: reef you can swim to without a boat
- Space: rooms that sleep four, or extra beds
- Child pricing: ask whether children pay a reduced rate
- Boat trips: priced per boat or per head

What can a family snorkel at Reconnect without diving?
None of the options below need a certification.
Option 1: The house reef
The house reef wall sits about 200 meters off the beach. Strong swimmers go straight in. With younger children, bring a kayak along so tired legs have somewhere to rest.
Option 2: Glass-bottom kayaks and paddleboards
Both are free. A glass-bottom kayak lets a child who refuses to put their face in the water still see the coral below.
Option 3: Guided snorkel boat trips
Guides run boats to Tanjung Pasir, a slope from 0 to 10 meters that is shallow enough for nervous swimmers, and to Tanjung Gurita. Each boat takes up to four people.
| Spots per trip | Price per boat |
|---|---|
| 1 | IDR 600,000 |
| 2 | IDR 1,000,000 |
| 3 | IDR 1,400,000 |
A family of four fills one boat. That puts a three-spot morning at IDR 350,000 per person.
Option 4: Togean Islands National Park
Reconnect sits just outside the park and serves as a gateway to it. The Togean Day Trip costs IDR 7,500,000 per boat and covers:
- A guide
- Lunch box
- Snorkel gear
- Park fees, if any, are extra
Which room works for a family of four?
| Room | Sleeps | Cooling | From, per night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Cabanon | 4, two bedrooms | Fan | €150 |
| Villa Athena | 4, two bedrooms | AC | €175 |
| Beachfront Villa with AC | 2, plus up to 2 extra beds | AC | €110 |
| Sunrise or Sunset Villa | 2, plus up to 2 extra beds | Fan | €80 |
Each displayed rate covers two people on full board, even in a two-bedroom villa. Extra beds carry a small additional charge. Children are priced by age:
- Under 3: free
- 3 to 11: IDR 300,000 per night
- 12 and over: adult pricing
Worked example: Le Cabanon at €150, plus two children aged 3 to 11 at IDR 300,000 each (IDR 600,000, about €30 at Reconnect's indicative rate of 20,000 IDR per euro), comes to about €180 per night.
Rates move with season and demand, and the final price is confirmed in IDR.
Reconnect is one of very few Togean Islands resorts offering air conditioning at all, but not every room has it. If your toddler sleeps badly in the heat, look at the AC villas first.
How does a family of four get to Buka Buka Island?
Luwuk is the main reliable gateway, and the route has three legs.
| Leg | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fly to Luwuk (LUW), mostly via Makassar | Check Traveloka | Varies |
| Private car to Ampana (max four passengers) | About 5 hours | IDR 1,000,000 per car each way |
| Free shuttle from Reconnect's jetty in Tete B, Ampana | Leaves 17:00, about 30 minutes; return leaves the island at 10:00 | Free |
Before you land, we send the driver's name, phone number and photo by WhatsApp.
On paper, the legs connect. In reality, a late flight can push you past 17:00, and a boat missed because of third-party delays counts as a non-refundable no-show.
With children, a night in Ampana is the calmer plan (we can recommend comfortable hotels), and travel insurance is mandatory.
The only other reliable route is the overnight ferry from Gorontalo to Wakai. Tell us in advance which boat you will take.
What else do families ask before booking?
Can our older children try scuba?
Yes, from age 10. Try Scuba is a half-day session at IDR 1,000,000, booked and paid separately from the stay. Instruction is available in English, French or Indonesian.
Is Buka Buka a private island?
Not in ownership terms. The name "Private Island Resort" describes the experience: Reconnect is the only resort on Buka Buka, and the island has no cars and no village. Reconnect does not own the island.
Can a parent work remotely?
Free Starlink Wi-Fi covers the resort. It is strongest in the restaurant and also available in the rooms. For video calls, plan to work from the restaurant.
Can the kitchen handle a child's food allergy?
Meals are celiac-conscious, but the kitchen is not certified gluten-free. Send us any allergy details before arrival so the team can tell you what they can prepare.
When is the sea calmest for children?
The dry season brings calm seas. The rainy season brings short showers and rougher boat crossings, which matters more for a seasick child than for the reef itself.
Who is Reconnect?
Reconnect is an island eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center, founded by Thomas Despin on Buka Buka Island. It runs on 93% solar power, desalinates its own water, uses zero single-use plastics, hires all staff locally and is a Blue Oceans certified center.
