Is Togean Islands Diving Worth It if You Only Have One Week in Indonesia?

Reconnect Team ·

Seven days in Indonesia is not much, and the Togean Islands sit at the end of a flight, a long drive and a boat. A large share of your week goes to transit, so the reefs have to justify that cost.

Our answer is yes, if you give the whole week to the Togeans and snorkeling or diving is why you came. It is no if you also want Bali or Komodo in the same seven days.

We run the SSI dive center on Buka Buka Island and coordinate guest arrivals from Luwuk Airport, so we see which one-week plans work and which end with a missed boat.

TL;DR

  • The route: fly to Luwuk (usually via Makassar), drive 5 hours to Ampana, then take the boat to Buka Buka. Count one full travel day each way.
  • What's left: about four diving days. That is enough for 8 boat dives or an SSI Open Water certification (3-4 days).
  • The water: visibility averages about 30 meters. The dry season brings the calmest seas.
  • The trade-off: lower overall marine biodiversity than Raja Ampat, but small groups, with a maximum of 4 divers per guide.
  • Skip it if you want to see more than one region of Indonesia in seven days.

How much of a one-week trip does getting to the Togeans take?

The boat decides your schedule. Our free daily shuttle leaves our jetty in Tete B, Ampana, at 17:00 and takes about 30 minutes. The return leaves the island at 10:00.

Option 1: Luwuk, same day (best)

  • Land at Luwuk early enough to finish the drive before the boat leaves Ampana.
  • We arrange a private car for IDR 1,000,000 per car each way, up to 4 passengers, paid separately.
  • Before you arrive, we send the driver's name, phone number and a photo of the driver and vehicle on WhatsApp.

Option 2: Luwuk with a night in Ampana

If your flight lands late, sleep in Ampana and take the next day's boat. We can recommend comfortable hotels there.

Option 3: Gorontalo (northern route)

An overnight ferry runs from Gorontalo to Wakai. It suits travelers already in North Sulawesi. Arrange the onward boat to Buka Buka with us in advance.

One rule matters more than any other. If a delayed flight or car makes you miss the boat, the booking counts as a no-show and is non-refundable. Build in a buffer.

Is diving good enough to justify the access time?

Togean diving wins on calm conditions and varied terrain, not on raw species count. Overall marine diversity is lower than in Raja Ampat. The islands also have endemic species on land, such as the Togean macaque.

What you get instead is variety within short boat rides. We dive more than 20 sites around Buka Buka:

Site Depth Suits new Open Water divers?
Coral Gardens 8-15 m Yes
The Wall 15-40 m+ Upper section only
Pinnacles 20-35 m No

SSI training standards cap Open Water divers at 18 meters, which explains the last column.

On a still morning, the Wall falls away beneath your fins into blue that seems to have no floor. Reconnect is the only resort on Buka Buka, a car-free island with no village.

What does a realistic seven-day plan look like?

A workable week puts four dive days in the middle and keeps both ends for travel and recovery.

Day Plan
1 Fly into Luwuk, drive to Ampana, take the 17:00 boat
2 Boat dives at 08:00 and 10:30, then afternoon snorkel on the house reef
3 Two boat dives, with an optional night dive
4 Two boat dives, then kayak or paddleboard
5 Two boat dives
6 No diving: Togean Islands National Park day trip or a Bajau village visit
7 10:00 boat, drive to Luwuk, fly out

Day 6 stays dry on purpose. Leave a no-fly gap after your last dive, because day 7 ends on a plane.

Dive times are confirmed each evening. They depend on weather, tides and the planned sites.

International arrivals change the plan. If your international flight lands on day 1, you will probably need a night in Makassar first, which leaves five island nights.

Which option fits your week, and what does it cost?

Room rates are for two people, full board. They include three meals, afternoon tea, coffee, tea, filtered water, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear and the shuttle. Diving and courses are paid separately.

Few Togean resorts offer air conditioning at all. Ours is available in some rooms, such as the Beachfront Villa with AC from €110, but not in every room.

EUR prices are indications: final pricing is in IDR and varies by season.

Option 1: You are already certified

  • Dive-cation package: 5 days and 4 nights with 8 boat dives, equipment, a guide, a Glamping Hut, full board and the return Ampana boat. It costs from €500 per person at 2026 rates. Flights, airport transfers and National Park dives are extra.
  • À la carte: fun dives start at IDR 800,000 for a single dive and drop to IDR 600,000 per dive when you book 10 or more. Bring your own equipment for 5% off.

Option 2: You want to learn

  • SSI Open Water: IDR 6,900,000, with 4 open water dives at sites around Buka Buka reached by a short boat ride.
  • SSI Advanced Adventurer: IDR 6,000,000 for 5 adventure dives over 2-3 days.
  • Try Scuba: IDR 1,000,000 for a half day, from age 10.
  • Languages: courses are taught in English, French or Indonesian, in small groups only.

Option 3: You will snorkel, paddle or mix

  • House reef: the reef wall starts 200 m from the beach, and the gear is free.
  • Guided snorkel trips: boats go to Tanjung Pasir (a 0-10 m slope) and Tanjung Gurita. One spot costs IDR 600,000 per boat for up to 4 people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need insurance?

Travel insurance is mandatory for every stay. For divers, we recommend DAN insurance. We keep emergency oxygen on-site, and our staff hold first-aid certification.

Is the rainy season a write-off?

No. Expect short showers and rougher boat crossings. The dive sites remain diveable.

Can I work remotely during the week?

Yes. Starlink Wi-Fi is free across the resort. It is strongest in the restaurant, and one guest found it weaker in their villa than in the common areas.
