How Do You Get to Luwuk Airport in the First Place?
Luwuk Airport (LUW) operates exclusively as a domestic facility. No international connections land there directly. We recommend flying Makassar → Luwuk on the flight that lands around 11:30: you reach the island the same day. Schedules change, so check Traveloka or the airline.
If you're arriving from Europe, Australia, or the US, you'll first fly into a major Indonesian hub, typically Manado or Makassar, then connect to Luwuk. Most visitors, including EU, UK, US and Australian passport holders, need a Visa on Arrival or an e-VoA (IDR 500,000, 30 days; the only official site is evisa.imigrasi.go.id).
That visa requires a passport valid at least six months and an onward ticket. Every arriving passenger must complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card online, free of charge, in the 3 days before arrival.
Book your Luwuk connection with a few hours of buffer after your international arrival. Domestic schedules in this part of Sulawesi are limited, and a missed connection means an extra night in a hub city rather than a quick rebooking.
What Happens Between Luwuk and Ampana?
A road transfer of approximately 5 hours [togean.com] runs south along Sulawesi's coast, through small towns and stretches of coastline before reaching Ampana, the jump-off port for the Togean Islands. There's no way to shorten this leg with a different vehicle or route; the road distance is fixed.
What you control is comfort and timing.
Private car, arranged in advance, is the most reliable option: fixed departure time, no waiting for other passengers.
Shared shuttle or public transport exists but adds unpredictable stops and waiting time.
Self-drive is possible but rarely worth it for a one-way transfer you won't repeat.

Do You Need to Overnight in Ampana?
Only if you land in the afternoon. The Makassar-Luwuk flight arriving around 11:30 AM is the one that gets you to Buka Buka the same day: the driver meets you at the airport, the 5-hour drive puts you in Ampana in the late afternoon, and the boat crosses well before dark.
If your flight lands later, then yes, plan one night in Ampana and cross the next day on the 17:00 shuttle (a morning crossing is a paid private charter). A 5-hour drive followed by an open-water crossing is not something to attempt after dark on an open boat; only the enclosed Pegasus charter (IDR 1,500,000 per boat, one way, booked at least 48 hours ahead) runs at night.

What Does the Ampana-to-Buka-Buka Boat Crossing Involve?
From Ampana, the final leg is a speedboat crossing of about 30 minutes to Buka Buka Island. Public speedboats also run the separate Ampana-to-Wakai route for around Rp 130,000-170,000 [togean.com], though that's a different stop, not the direct route to Buka Buka.
Every maritime transfer in Indonesian waters must use an Indonesian-flagged vessel holding a valid safety certificate from the Directorate General of Sea Transportation. Operators are required to carry life jackets and obtain Port Clearance from the local Harbor Master before each voyage.
