Arriving on a remote island with theory or medical clearance still unfinished costs you dive days, so clear it all before you fly. At Reconnect's eco-resort with an on-site SSI dive center in the Togean Islands, that preparation decides whether your Open Water course starts in the water or at a table.
Guests from Europe spend 20-24 hours reaching Buka Buka Island. Roughly half arrive as divers or first-time certification students.
TL;DR
- Spread the digital academics over two weeks instead of cramming on the plane.
- SSI's training standards set the final exam pass mark at 80% for a written exam and 100% when you take it online [training.divessi.com]. Treat the knowledge reviews as practice tests.
- Pack your completed medical paperwork with your passport.
- Aim to be done before your Makassar transit, not during it.
- Your first full day on the island is your first course day.
Why does unfinished eLearning cost more on a remote island?
The Open Water course runs in a fixed order: academics, confined water skills, then open water dives.
That lock matters more on an island. Training dives happen at reef sites around Buka Buka Island, reached by a short boat ride. A missed boat means a missed dive.
Our Starlink Wi-Fi is strongest in the restaurant and also reaches the rooms. It handles study well, but it turns an island day into an office day.

What should you finish at home, step by step?
Step 1: Complete every eLearning session
- Link your SSI account to the dive center you will train with, so your instructor can follow your progress.
- Work through the sessions in order and finish each knowledge review.
- Download everything for offline use once you are done.
Step 2: Prepare for the final exam
Go back to the sections where you scored lowest. Pressure and depth, air planning and navigation are common stumbling blocks.
Step 3: Clear the medical questionnaire
Answer it honestly. Any "yes" requires a physician's sign-off before you start in-water training.
Your own doctor knows your history. Getting clearance at home is far simpler than arranging it from a remote island.
Step 4: Sort the island logistics
There are no ATMs in the Togean Islands. The nearest one is in Luwuk. Book your course dates in advance, as we teach small groups only.
Which parts of an Open Water course can only happen in the water?
| Course element | Where it happens | Can you do it at home? |
|---|---|---|
| Digital academics and knowledge reviews | Anywhere | Yes, and you should |
| Final exam | Before certification is issued | Prepare fully, then confirm with your instructor |
| Medical clearance | Before you travel | Yes (see Step 3) |
| Confined water skills | On site with your instructor | No |
| 4 open water training dives | Reef sites around Buka Buka Island | No |
| Certification record | Your MySSI account | Issued once you complete the course |
Our Open Water course runs 3-4 days. Visibility here averages about 30 meters. Certification lets you dive to 18 meters with a certified buddy.
Our next course is SSI Advanced Adventurer, with five adventure dives over 2-3 days.
What if you arrive with the eLearning unfinished?
You can still do the course. The question is what the delay costs you.
Option 1 (best): Finish at home
You arrive rested, the exam is the only theory left, and every course day is a water day.
Option 2 (workable): Finish in transit
Downloaded sessions work offline during the Makassar layover or the 5-hour drive from Luwuk to Ampana. Be honest with yourself, though. Reading in a car on Sulawesi roads doesn't work for everyone.
An optional overnight in Ampana gives you a quiet evening to finish.
Option 3 (least reliable): Finish on the island
It works, but expect to lose at least one dive day. On a four-night stay, that can leave you short of time for all four training dives.
If you're unsure about committing, a half-day Discover Scuba Diving session (€80) lets you try diving first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old do you need to be for SSI Open Water?
The minimum age is 10. You need basic water fitness and no prior diving experience.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
No. Courses include a BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins and mask. Dive computers are rented separately.
The water stays at 27-30°C, so a 3mm wetsuit is enough.
Can I take the course in French?
Yes. We teach in English, French or Indonesian.
What safety support is there so far from a city?
We keep emergency oxygen on site, and our staff are first-aid certified. The nearest recompression chamber is RS Bhayangkara in Palu, and emergency transport is available.
