Best Time to Visit the Togean Islands: Seasons, Sea and Diving

Reconnect Team · ·6 min read

The short answer: come between April and November, the dry season, when the seas are calm. December to March is the rainy season, with short showers, rougher boat crossings and the strongest winds from December to February. You can still dive then, and there are fewer guests.

This guide explains what each part of the year is like on the water, for diving, snorkeling and the boat crossing, from Buka Buka, where Reconnect runs its resort and dive center.

When is the best time to visit the Togean Islands?

April to November. This is the dry season, with calm seas and excellent visibility for diving. December to March is the rainy season: the showers are short rather than constant rain, and the diving goes on, but the crossings are rougher and the winds are strongest from December to February.

You can come in any month. It's a trade: calmer seas in the dry season, fewer guests in the rainy one. Weather is never guaranteed, whatever the month, so build a little flexibility into your plans whenever you come.

What is each part of the year like?

The seasons are simple to read, and the table sums them up.

Months

Season

Sea and boat crossing

Diving and snorkeling

April–November

Dry season

Calm seas

Excellent visibility

December–February

Rainy season

Short showers, rougher crossings, the strongest winds of the year

Still diveable

March

Rainy season

Short showers and rougher crossings, after the windiest months

Still diveable

The temperature stays at 28–32 °C all year, and the water at 27–30 °C. A 3 mm wetsuit or a rash guard is enough for diving, and snorkelers can go in swimwear.

What is the rainy season really like?

Short showers rather than constant rain. The real difference is the sea: from December to March the crossings are rougher, and from December to February the wind is at its strongest. What that means for your trip:

  • The boat runs every day. The free shuttle leaves Ampana at 17:00 and Buka Buka at 10:00, but every sailing depends on the weather and the captain's judgement.

  • Keep a buffer before flights. Boats can be cancelled by weather, especially from December to February. One or two spare days before an onward flight from Luwuk is a sensible margin.

  • Fewer guests. The rainy season is the quieter time of year.

  • Pack a light rain jacket. It earns its place in your bag from December to March.

Prefer a covered cabin for the crossing? The Pegasus has an enclosed cabin and can be chartered outside the free shuttle times: IDR 1,500,000 per boat, one way, booked at least 48 hours ahead.

When is the best time for diving and snorkeling?

The dry season, April to November, brings calm seas and excellent visibility; 30 m or more is typical around Buka Buka. Diving carries on in the rainy season: the sites are still diveable, but the sea can be rougher.

How a diving day works at Reconnect, in any season:

  • Every dive is a boat dive. The house reef is about 5 minutes away by boat.

  • The usual plan is 2 boat dives in the morning, around 08:00 and 10:30. Exact times are confirmed each evening, based on the weather, the tides and the planned sites. Afternoon and night dives are on request, the day before.

  • Groups are small: a maximum of 4 divers per guide, on more than 20 sites around Buka Buka.

  • New to diving? Try Scuba is one dive with an instructor, all equipment included, for IDR 1,000,000. The minimum age is 10.

For snorkelers, the house reef is free and close: at high tide you can swim out to it from the beach, and snorkeling equipment is free for guests. Tanjung Pasir, the white sandbank in the north-east of the island, reached by a walking trail from the resort, has a sheltered bay with a gentle sandy slope that suits beginners and families.

See diving on Buka Buka for the sites and courses, or the Dive-cation package: 5 days and 4 nights with 8 boat dives around Buka Buka.

Is November a good time to visit the Togean Islands?

Yes. November is still the dry season, with calm seas. The same goes for April and June: all three fall inside the dry season, which runs from April to November.

Room prices follow the calendar too. Rooms cost from €60 to €200 per night for 2 guests, full board, and the final price varies with the season and occupancy, so check your dates on the booking page to see the live rate.

How long should you stay, and how do you plan the trip?

Stay 5 to 7 nights. There is no minimum stay, but the journey in and out is long, and 7 nights gives you time to dive or snorkel several sites, take a day trip and still have slow days on the beach. Ten nights or more works well for divers and remote workers.

Four planning steps that work in any season:

  1. Book the right flight. We recommend flying Makassar → Luwuk on the flight that lands around 11:30, so you reach the island the same day. Schedules change, so check Traveloka or the airline. An afternoon landing means a night in Luwuk or Ampana.

  2. Take out travel insurance. It is mandatory, and it must cover medical evacuation, weather disruptions, missed connections, illness and cancellation.

  3. Plan the first and last day. Check-in is at 12:00 and check-out at 10:00 (WITA). The free shuttle leaves Buka Buka at 10:00; for a 15:00 flight from Luwuk the same day, you need the 07:00 private charter (paid).

  4. Book the car early. Reconnect arranges the car from Luwuk to Ampana (about 5 hours, IDR 1,000,000 per car, up to 4 people, each way), paid separately. Send the team your flight details on WhatsApp.

What to pack, whatever the month: light, breathable clothes, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, a sun hat and any medication you need, as there is no pharmacy on the island. Add a light rain jacket from December to March. Outlets are European-style 230V, so bring a universal adapter if you need one, and divers should bring their logbook and certification cards. Towels and snorkeling gear are provided.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dive in the Togean Islands from December to March?

Yes. It is the rainy season, but the sites are still diveable. Expect short showers and rougher crossings, with the strongest winds from December to February. Dive times are confirmed each evening, based on the weather.

Does the weather ever stop the boat?

It can. The free shuttle runs every day, but every sailing depends on the weather and the captain's judgement, so no crossing is ever guaranteed. If a boat can't sail, the team will try to reschedule your transfer. That is why we recommend a buffer before onward flights.

Does travel insurance cover weather delays?

Your policy must. Travel insurance is mandatory for every stay at Reconnect, and it has to cover weather disruptions and missed connections, as well as medical evacuation, illness and cancellation. Insurance is never included in the rate.

Do prices change with the seasons?

Yes. Rooms cost from €60 to €200 per night for 2 guests, full board, and the final price, in rupiah (IDR), varies with the season and occupancy. The booking engine always shows the live rate for your dates.

What is the water temperature?

27–30 °C all year. A 3 mm wetsuit or a rash guard is enough for diving, and snorkelers can go in swimwear.
