In the Togean Islands, the island you choose matters more than the room you book. Boats are the only way to move between islands, so where you sleep decides how easily you arrive, which reefs you can reach and how much of each day you spend on the water.
This guide compares the main islands in plain terms, explains how the boats work and shows what a stay on Buka Buka, the island where Reconnect is, looks like in practice.
Where should you stay in the Togean Islands?
Choose access first and atmosphere second. If you have a week or less, a base with a short, reliable link to the mainland saves time at both ends of the trip. If you have longer, a second island can add variety.
The main options, in one line each:
Buka Buka: a car-free island just outside Togean Islands National Park, about 30 minutes by boat from Ampana. Reconnect is the only settlement on it; there is no village.
Bomba and Batudaka: the quieter south-western cluster, closest to Ampana, with atoll dives.
Kadidiri: a classic Togean base, with several resorts on one bay and dive centers, a short hop from Wakai.
Malenge: on the east side, known for reefs and beaches close to shore and for Pulau Papan, a Bajau stilt village linked to Malenge by a boardwalk. It takes longer to reach from Ampana.
Una Una: the northern outlier, with a volcano, Gunung Colo, and dives known for schooling fish.
Walea Kodi: far east and remote, reached by a longer transfer with several legs.
Wakai, the main port on Togean Island, is a transport hub rather than a place to stay.
How do the Togean islands compare?
Boats are the roads here. For most travellers the way in is the mainland port of Ampana; a northern route runs by overnight ferry from Gorontalo to Wakai. The table shows what each island is like and how long the boat takes from Buka Buka. Reconnect arranges these boats on WhatsApp. Prices are per boat, one way, so a group can share the cost.
Island | What it is like | Speedboat from Buka Buka | Local boat from Buka Buka |
|---|---|---|---|
Bomba | Quiet south-western cluster, closest to Ampana | 45 min · IDR 2,500,000 | 1 h 30 · IDR 1,200,000 |
Wakai | Main port of Togean Island, a transport hub | 1 h · IDR 3,000,000 | 2 h · IDR 1,500,000 |
Kadidiri | Classic base, several resorts on one bay | 1 h 20 · IDR 4,000,000 | 2 h 30 · IDR 1,800,000 |
Malenge | East side, reefs and beaches, Bajau village nearby | 1 h 45 · IDR 5,000,000 | 3 h · IDR 2,500,000 |
Una Una | Northern outlier with a volcano | 1 h 45 · IDR 5,000,000 | 3 h · IDR 2,500,000 |
The speedboat has an enclosed cabin and takes up to 10 people; the local boat is roofed and takes up to 6. Walea Kodi and the small islands around Katupat are not on this list: the team can plan a trip with several legs, usually via Wakai.
Two things shape every itinerary. The weather: boats can be cancelled by weather, especially in the windier December–February window, and every sailing depends on the captain's judgement. And the timetable: public boats from Ampana run on set days that change, so check the day you need before you plan around it.
What is it like to stay on Buka Buka?
Quiet, and easy to reach. Buka Buka is car-free and has no village: Reconnect is the only settlement, so the beaches feel genuinely private. The island lies just outside Togean Islands National Park, and the boat from Ampana takes about 30 minutes.
Reconnect has 20 rooms and villas, from €60 to €200 per night for 2 guests, full board. The final price is in rupiah (IDR) on the booking engine and changes with the season and occupancy.
On the beach: every room is beachfront except the Pyramid, which has a garden view. All beachfront rooms face the sunset, whatever their name.
Air conditioning: the Beachfront Villa with AC, Villa Athena and Villa Togean. The other rooms are fan-cooled.
Space: most rooms sleep 2, with up to 2 extra beds on request (extra charge). Le Cabanon, Villa Athena and Villa Togean have 2 bedrooms and sleep up to 4.
Diving: an on-site SSI dive center, more than 20 dive sites around Buka Buka and a maximum of 4 divers per guide. See diving on Buka Buka.
Snorkeling and water gear: at high tide you can swim out to the house reef from the beach, and kayaks, glass-bottom kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkeling equipment are free for guests.
Who it suits: divers and people learning to dive, couples, families, remote workers and anyone who wants nature without fake luxury. Who it doesn't suit: travellers looking for nightlife, shops or roads. There are none on the island.

What does a stay at Reconnect include?
Full board and the free boat, but not the car from the airport. Every room rate includes:
3 meals a day plus afternoon tea, and unlimited filtered water, coffee and tea
Starlink Wi-Fi and 24/7 electricity (93% solar)
kayaks, glass-bottom kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkeling equipment, sun loungers and yoga mats
the free daily boat shuttle between Ampana and Buka Buka, and the team's help planning your journey
taxes and service
Not included: the car from Luwuk, diving, alcohol, juices and soft drinks, laundry (IDR 50,000 per kg), excursions, massage, park fees if any, and travel insurance. The full list is on what's included.
You pay for the room in full when you book, by card through the booking link. Extras on the island go on your bill and are settled at check-out by card, bank transfer, Wise, Revolut or cash in rupiah. There is no ATM on Buka Buka or on most Togean islands; the nearest is in Ampana.
How do you get to Buka Buka?
Fly to Luwuk, drive about 5 hours to Ampana, then cross by boat in about 30 minutes. Door to door from Jakarta or Bali, count 8 to 10 hours. Every guest arrives through Ampana.
Flight: we recommend flying Makassar → Luwuk on the flight that lands around 11:30, so you reach the island the same day. Schedules change, so check Traveloka or the airline. An afternoon landing means a night in Luwuk or Ampana.
Car: Reconnect arranges a private, air-conditioned car from Luwuk to Ampana for IDR 1,000,000 per car (up to 4 people), each way, paid separately. The driver's name and photo reach you on WhatsApp 24 hours before you arrive.
Boat: the free shuttle leaves Reconnect's own jetty in Tete B, Ampana ("Reconnect's Harbour" on Google Maps), at 17:00 every day and comes back from Buka Buka at 10:00. It is free for every guest, both ways, with no minimum stay. Tell the team in advance which boat you will take.
Need a boat at another time? A private charter costs IDR 1,000,000 (open-deck boat, up to 8 people, daytime only) or IDR 1,500,000 (the Pegasus, up to 10 people, enclosed cabin, day and night), per boat, one way. Book at least 48 hours ahead. If you fly out of Luwuk at 15:00 on the day you leave, you need the 07:00 private charter: the free 10:00 boat is too late for that flight.
Coming from the north via Gorontalo and the ferry to Wakai, or starting on another island? Our guide to getting to the Togean Islands covers the routes, and the Access page has every detail for Buka Buka.
Can you combine Buka Buka with another island?
Yes. Reconnect arranges boats from Buka Buka to Bomba, Wakai, Kadidiri, Malenge and Una Una (times and prices in the table above), so you can move on to a second base or go across for the day.
The easiest way to see more of the archipelago is the Togean day trip: a full day by speedboat with a guide, a lunch box and snorkel gear, stopping at Karina Beach, Jellyfish Lake, Pulau Papan and a Bajau village. It costs IDR 7,500,000 per boat, and the price can be shared with other guests.
There is no minimum stay, but because the journey in and out is long, we recommend 5 to 7 nights. If you split your trip between two islands, keep a buffer: a cancelled boat should never be the reason you miss a flight, and one or two spare days before an onward flight from Luwuk is a sensible margin. For the seasons, read our guide to the best time to visit the Togean Islands.

Frequently asked questions
Are there ATMs in the Togean Islands?
Not on Buka Buka, and not on most Togean islands. The nearest ATM to Reconnect is in Ampana; there are also ATMs in Luwuk, Palu and Gorontalo. At Reconnect you don't need much cash: the room is paid at booking and extras are settled at check-out. Bring some rupiah for tips.
Can I visit the national park from Buka Buka?
Yes. Buka Buka lies just outside Togean Islands National Park, and the rest of the archipelago is a boat ride away. The Togean day trip (IDR 7,500,000 per boat, full day with a guide, lunch box and snorkel gear) is the easiest way to see it. Park fees, if any, are not included.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is mandatory for every stay. It must cover medical evacuation, weather disruptions, missed connections, illness and cancellation. DAN dive insurance is recommended for divers. Insurance is never included in the rate.
Is there a hospital near Buka Buka?
There is no clinic on the island. Reconnect has a first-aid kit, trained staff and emergency oxygen on site. The nearest hospital is RSUD Ampana, and there is also a hospital in Wakai (RSUD Wakai). The nearest decompression chamber is in Palu (RS Bhayangkara).
How many nights should I stay?
There is no minimum stay. We recommend 5 to 7 nights: enough to dive or snorkel several sites, take a day trip and still have slow days on the beach.
