Teenagers rarely put their phones down on holiday, and a total ban usually starts a fight that lasts all week. Our view is simple. Keep the connection, give it one place and one time of day, and fill the rest of the day with reef.
TL;DR
- Replace screen time rather than ban it. Agree on a daily Wi-Fi window before you fly.
- Choose a place where the signal has one natural centre and the day follows a fixed rhythm set by boats and tides.
- Teenagers can earn SSI Open Water in 3-4 days, and Try Scuba starts from age 10.
- Most of what fills a teenager's day on Buka Buka costs nothing extra. The real budget decision is the room.
Should a family digital detox ban Wi-Fi completely?
Usually not.
A confiscated phone works like a diet that only removes food. The craving stays and the empty hours stay empty, so the rule breaks by day three.
A daily window also removes the real worry, which is missing a message from friends at home. Teenagers who know they can check at 19:00 stop checking at 11:00.
Structured detox retreats in Bali offer juice cleanses, sound healing and yoga programs. Those suit families who want the schedule set for them. An island stay suits families who want to write their own rules.

What makes a remote island easier for teenagers to unplug on?
Buka Buka is car-free and has no village. There is no town, mall or café to drift toward.
Reconnect is the only resort on the island, creating an uncrowded experience with no external pull toward screens or shops.
The Wi-Fi follows the same layout. It reaches the rooms but is strongest in the restaurant, and one guest review found it weaker in their villa than in the common area.
In practice, that pulls phone time into shared space, where it stays visible and shorter.
Is scuba diving for teenagers a good replacement for screen time?
For many teenagers it is a strong replacement, because diving demands full attention and ends with a certification card they can show their friends. Nobody scrolls underwater.
It also moves the day earlier. We usually run two morning boat dives, around 08:00 and 10:30, and confirm times each evening based on weather, tides and planned sites.
| SSI option | What it involves | Reconnect price | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Try Scuba | From age 10 at Reconnect. No certification needed | IDR 1,000,000 | Half day |
| Open Water Diver | Academics, skills training, 4 open water dives | IDR 6,900,000 | 3-4 days |
| Advanced Adventurer | 5 adventure dives | IDR 6,000,000 | 2-3 days |
Courses are booked and paid separately from the stay. Training dives take place at reef sites around Buka Buka, a short boat ride away, where visibility averages about 30 meters.
Instruction is in English, French or Indonesian, in small groups. Guided fun dives cap at 4 divers per guide.
How should you plan a family week on Buka Buka?
Step 1: Agree on the rules before you fly
- Pick one window, for example 30 minutes after dinner in the restaurant.
- Parents follow the same rule. Teenagers copy what adults do, not what they say.
- Phones charge outside the bedroom. Outlets are European-style, and most rooms have USB ports.
- Allow one approved exception, such as posting dive photos. A permitted outlet reduces sneaking.
Step 2: Choose the room for four
Teenagers 12 and over are priced as adults. Children aged 3-11 pay IDR 300,000 per night, and under-3s stay free. Displayed rates are for 2 on full board, so ask us for a whole-family quote.
| Villa | Bedrooms | Cooling | From, per night for 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Cabanon | 2 | Fan | €150 |
| Villa Athena | 2 | AC | €175 |
Few Togean Islands resorts offer air conditioning at all, and a cool room helps teenagers sleep before an early dive. Not every room at Reconnect has it. The Beachfront Villa with AC (from €110) takes up to 2 extra beds for a small charge.
Step 3: Know what the rate covers
If you are comparing all-inclusive family resort options, check what teenagers actually spend money on.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do we get to Buka Buka with teenagers?
Fly to Luwuk (LUW), usually via Makassar. We arrange a private car to Ampana, which takes about 5 hours and costs IDR 1,000,000 per car each way for up to 4 passengers.
A family of five needs two cars. Our free shuttle boat leaves our jetty in Tete B, Ampana, at 17:00 and takes about 30 minutes.
What if my teenager gets restless after three days?
Book the Togean Day Trip. It is a private boat into Togean Islands National Park with a guide, lunch box and snorkel gear, at IDR 7,500,000 per boat.
A visit to a nearby Bajau sea-nomad village or a night dive (IDR 1,000,000) also breaks the routine.
How safe is diving there for a teenager?
Our dive center follows SSI training standards, keeps emergency oxygen on site and has first-aid certified staff. Travel insurance is mandatory for every stay, and we recommend DAN dive insurance.
When is the best time to travel with teenagers?
Buka Buka is open year-round. The dry season brings calm seas. The rainy season brings short showers and rougher crossings, but the reefs stay diveable.
Can two families book the whole resort?
Yes. We quote whole-resort bookings individually over WhatsApp. A deposit secures the booking, and the balance is due before arrival.
