Comparing nightly rates across Togean Islands accommodation tells you very little. A homestay costs less per night but leaves more of each day for you to arrange. An eco-resort folds meals, equipment and part of the transfer into one rate.
We run Reconnect, an eco-resort on Buka Buka Island that has hosted guests since 2020. The resort figures below are our own published rates and inclusions.
TL;DR
- Homestays win on price and on time spent with local families. Eco-resorts win on predictability: food, gear and power are settled before you land.
- At Reconnect, every rate covers three meals, Starlink Wi-Fi, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear and the daily boat shuttle from Ampana.
- Diving, dive courses, the car from Luwuk Airport, alcohol, laundry and national park fees cost extra.
- There are no ATMs in the Togean Islands, whichever bed you book.
What does Togean Islands accommodation cost per night?
Starting prices run from a family room to a full-board eco-resort. The unit behind each price matters as much as the number.
| Option | Starting price | Price basis | Meals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family homestay | about $15 | per night | home-cooked meals |
| Mid-range eco-resort | Rp 400,000 | per person, per night | full board |
| Reconnect (Beachfront Glamping Hut, Pyramid) | EUR 60 | per night, for two | full board |
Full board here works like the menu at a mountain hut. Standalone restaurants are rare across the archipelago. The kitchen that feeds you is usually the one under your roof, so resorts price meals into the bed.
Split between two guests, our entry rate is about EUR 30 per person, with government taxes and service charges included. EUR figures are indicative. Final pricing is in IDR and moves with occupancy, season and demand.

What does each option include?
The price gap only makes sense once you set it against what each rate covers.
Option 1: Family homestay
Homestays are typically run by local families, with basic amenities and home-cooked meals. Standards vary by island and by host, so confirm these before you pay:
- How many meals are included, and at what times?
- When is electricity available, and is there Wi-Fi?
- Where does the drinking water come from?
- Is snorkel gear available, or should you bring your own?
- Who handles the boat from the mainland, and at what cost?
Option 2: Eco-resort (Reconnect as the worked example)
- Meals: buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with Indonesian and international dishes, plus afternoon tea and unlimited coffee, tea and water. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets are covered if you tell us at booking.
- Power: 93% solar with a battery bank, around the clock. A diesel generator stands by as backup only.
- Water: a reverse-osmosis desalination unit supplies all of it, part of our zero single-use plastics policy.
- Cooling: most rooms are fan-cooled. The Beachfront Villa with AC and Villa Athena have air conditioning, which few Togean Islands resorts offer at all.
- Snorkeling: the house reef wall sits about 200 meters from the beach, with visibility averaging about 30 meters.
- Space: Le Cabanon and Villa Athena sleep up to four. An extra bed can be added to any room for a small charge.
What is left to you either way?
Choosing a bed settles less of the trip than most travelers expect. Three jobs stay with you.
Step 1: Get yourself to Ampana
Luwuk is the main gateway, reached via Makassar on Wings Air or AirAsia. The only other reliable route into the islands runs through Gorontalo.
- With us, the Luwuk Airport to Ampana car takes about 5 hours. We coordinate it and independent operators run it.
- Our free shuttle leaves our jetty in Tete B, Ampana, at 17:00 and returns at 10:00. The 11:25 arrival in Luwuk is the flight to aim for.
- With a homestay, ask who meets you and from which port.
Step 2: Carry cash from Luwuk
Luwuk has the nearest ATM, so withdraw there for anything you will settle in cash on the islands. Reconnect takes full payment at reservation by Visa, Mastercard or Amex, or by bank transfer or WISE on request via WhatsApp. Card payments are processed in IDR.
Step 3: Budget diving and the national park separately
- Reconnect is a gateway to Togean Islands National Park, not inside it. Visits run as our paid Togean Day Trip, plus park fees where applicable.
- Discover Scuba Diving costs EUR 80 for a half day.
- SSI Open Water and Advanced Adventurer courses are booked and paid separately from the stay. Training dives use reef sites around Buka Buka Island, a short boat ride out, taught in English, French or Indonesian.
- A 5-day, 4-night dive package bundles 8 guided boat dives with full board and equipment, at EUR 500+ per person. It does not include a course.
Which one should you choose?
The choice comes down to how much of each day you want to arrange yourself.
- Choose a homestay if budget leads, you are island hopping on a long route, and you value family contact over fixed standards.
- Choose an eco-resort if your window is short, you plan to dive, or you need reliable power, air conditioning or a specific diet.
- Split the trip if you have two weeks or more: homestay nights while hopping, resort nights for diving or rest.
- Least suited: a three-night trip split between two bases. Boat transfers between islands eat into short stays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Wi-Fi good enough to work from?
Our Starlink connection is strongest in the restaurant and also reaches the rooms. Outlets are European-style, and most rooms have USB charging ports. For a month or longer, our Island Residency program tailors a rate with you directly.
What happens if a delayed flight makes me miss the boat?
If third-party transport delays you past the shuttle, the booking is treated as a no-show and is non-refundable. A private charter on our Pegasus speedboat, which runs day and night, or a night in Ampana are the fallbacks.
Travel insurance covering weather disruption and cancellation for any reason is mandatory.
Do eco-resorts in the Togeans follow conservation rules?
Our dive center is Blue Oceans certified, all staff are hired locally, and we buy from neighbouring villages.
Can I bring my own dive gear?
Yes, and it takes 5% off your dives. All dives and courses already include BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins and mask. Tanks are 12-liter aluminium, and dive computers are rented separately.
Is booking direct different from Booking.com or Agoda?
OTA bookings follow the platform's cancellation rules, which we cannot override. Booking direct carries our best-rate guarantee and no agency fees.
