Discover Scuba Diving in Remote Indonesia When You Only Have One Free Morning

Reconnect Team ·

Most travelers reach the Togean Islands on a tight itinerary. Many find a single open morning in it and wonder whether that is enough to try diving.

It is, with a little planning. A remote island runs on boat schedules, not walk-in bookings.

We run these first dives from Reconnect's on-site SSI dive center on Buka Buka Island. Instruction is in English, French or Indonesian, in small groups only.

TL;DR

  • "Discover Scuba Diving" is what most people search for. At an SSI center, the same experience is called SSI Try Scuba. No certification is needed, and the minimum age is 10.
  • Try Scuba is paid separately from the all-inclusive full-board rate.
  • Book it for a full day on the island, never your arrival or departure day.
  • One morning tells you whether you love diving. Certification takes several more days.

What is an intro scuba dive, and can you go scuba diving without certification?

Yes. An intro scuba dive exists for people with no certification. SSI does not issue a "Discover Scuba" certification. Its version, SSI Try Scuba, is a recognition program, not a license, so afterwards you still dive only under supervision.

Every Try Scuba begins with a confined water session before any open water.

Think of it as a first driving lesson in an empty car park. You practise clearing a flooded mask and recovering your regulator where a mistake costs nothing.

That way the open water dive can be about the reef, not about remembering skills.

Before your session:

  • Be comfortable in the water.
  • Complete a medical questionnaire honestly. Some conditions need a doctor's sign-off before you dive.
  • Mention any ear or sinus problems, because you will equalize pressure as you descend.

How does a first dive fit into one free morning?

A half-day dive fits one morning only if the decision happens the night before.

Step 1: Tell the dive team the evening before

We confirm dive times each evening, based on weather, tides and the planned sites. Ask then, and your slot is set with that plan.

Step 2: Start early

Our usual plan runs two morning boat dives, around 08:00 and 10:30. Paperwork, briefing and gear fitting come first, so eat a light breakfast.

Step 3: Take the boat out

Training dives happen at reef sites around Buka Buka Island, reached by a short boat ride, with your instructor beside you.

Step 4: Check your travel days

Neither arrival nor departure morning works for a dive. Your arrival shuttle leaves Ampana at 17:00, and your departure shuttle leaves the island at 10:00.

Is the Togean Islands a good place for first time scuba diving?

Beginners do best where conditions are calm and clear, not where a destination is famous. The Togeans sit in the Gulf of Tomini in Central Sulawesi.

Around Buka Buka, visibility averages about 30 meters. Light penetrates far down the coral walls, allowing a nervous beginner to see the instructor, the surface and the reef all at once. On our guided dives, each guide takes a maximum of 4 divers.

The tradeoff is honest. Getting here means a flight to Luwuk, a drive to Ampana, then a boat.

We are an eco-resort with an on-site dive center, and many guests never dive at all.

What comes after SSI Try Scuba?

It does not teach you to dive. If you want certification, plan consecutive days on the island.

Next step Best for Duration Price at Reconnect
Extra Try Scuba dive A second supervised dive before committing One dive IDR 800,000
SSI Open Water Diver Learning to dive with a buddy, without an instructor 3-4 days, 4 open water dives IDR 6,900,000

Dive-cation Package Certified divers: 8 guided boat dives, glamping hut, full board 5 days / 4 nights From EUR 500 per person (2026)

Courses are booked and paid separately from your stay. The Dive-cation Package bundles guided dives, not training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a first dive safe this far from a hospital?

We follow SSI training standards and keep emergency oxygen on-site. Our staff are first aid certified. Travel insurance is mandatory for all guests, and we recommend DAN dive insurance on top.

What if the sea is rough on my free morning?

Dry season brings calm seas. Rainy season brings short showers and rougher crossings, but it is still diveable. If your dates are flexible, a second free morning gives you a buffer.

Can I fly soon after the dive?

Divers need a surface interval before flying. Tell your instructor your flight time so the dive day can be planned around it.

What does a non-diving partner do that morning?

They can snorkel the house reef. It is a 200m wall reached from the beach, and masks, fins and snorkels are free. Kayaks, glass-bottom kayaks and paddleboards are also included in the stay.
